Storm And Elliott To Host Rose Bowl Parade on ESPN

Monday, December 29, 2008

I can't remember the last time I caught the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day, but ESPN thinks it's important enough to send their two morning Sports Center hosts to cover the event. Hannah Storm and Josh Elliott will be your hosts for the pomp and circumstance starting at 11am on New Year's Day. Via ESPN PR....

On Thursday, Jan. 1 at 11 a.m. ET, ABC will ring in the New Year with live coverage of the 120th Tournament of Roses Parade. The Rose Parade will once again feature the beautiful pageantry and tradition of magnificent floral floats, high-stepping equestrians and spirited marching bands. SportsCenter anchors Hannah Storm and Josh Elliot will host.

Brent Musburger, Kirk Herbstreit and Lisa Salters will work the Rose Bowl Game Presented by Citi on ABC (Jan. 1) at 4:30 p.m. ESPN Monday Night Football commentator Mike Tirico will call the Rose Bowl Game Presented by Citi on ESPN Radio with analyst David Norrie and reporter Erin Andrews.
I'm thinking it will be like the Macy's Day Parade coverage, only with less floating cartoon characters and more chessy jokes. Should be fun!

OK, just because the Rose Bowl Parade is associated with the event ESPN/ABC is covering later that day DOES NOT mean that they have to put ESPN on something where it clearly doesn't fit--like a friggin' parade.

Don't get me wrong--both the parade and the game are great events. But they should never, ever be promoted as one big event. They attract two totally different audiences and incite two totally different sets of moods. Some of ESPN's best ideas have come after seeing some crapshoot idea stick to a wall, but some of these things shouldn't even be greenlit.

The best coverage of the Rose Bowl Parade is on HGTV. They have much better camera angles and a lot less commercials than ABC, plus there are no 'celebrity' guests that are present for purely self promotional purposes.

AA - You can't remember the last time you caught the Rose Bowl parade? How is that possible? It's on like seven different channels New Year's morning. I envy you...I always get sucked in to watching like 10 minutes of it before remembering football is on.

And your headline is a tad misleading...the parade will be shown on ABC, not ESPN.

First of all, I actually like Lisa Salters. She looked really pretty during the Celtics/Lakers game on Christmas. Secondly, screw the Rose Bowl and everything about it. If college football is a religion, then the Rose Bowl is the antichrist because it undermines all of our playoff hopes and dreams, at least for a couple more yars anyway.

Actually the best coverage of the Rose Parade is the local coverage in L.A. on KTLA. It's pretty much a local institution. Even if you have to put up with Bob Eubanks and Stephanie Edwards (she was out for a couple of years and it was a big deal in these parts).

KTLA shows the parade in HD without commercials and then repeats.

Remember last year for the Rose Parade on ABC, ESPN First Take's Jay Crawford and Dana Jacobsen hosted the Rose Parade on ABC and ESPN bought the rights to the parade when they got the game.

"Erin Andrews on radio? Lisa Salters on TV? What's wrong with this picture???"

Thats exactly what I was thinking. You gotta have EA on TV!

I'm not sure what the flip-out is over... On Thursday, Jan. 1 at 11 a.m. ET, ABC will ring in the New Year with live coverage ... it's not "on ESPN", they're just using Hannah Storm and Josh Elliott to cross promote... just like the last guy said, it's the same as having Jay Crawford and Dana Jacobsen do it...

I'll go along with Gregg. If you don't have access to KTLA's coverage, then HGTV is the next best option. Sorry ... Hannah Storm may be the best thing to happen to ESPN since Chris Berman got laryngitis, but ESPN has no business covering a parade.

I just hate and despise this ESPN on ABC crap and ABC should be allowed to have its own identifiers for the Rose Bowl Game and the parade itself and not cross-promote it with ESPN. Just getting tired of watching ABC Sports being dummed down to another ESPN affiliate or channel.

The coverage of the Rose Bowl by ABC stinks even more! They ignore the fact there are two teams playing. Their worship of all things USC is enough to gag a maggot. They are more impressed with USC and their own comments than the....game.

I have to agree, Josh Elliot is awful. He's so obnoxious and full of himself that I can't stand to watch morning Sportscenter sometimes. And the way he treats other anchors, especially Hannah Storm, is disgusting. I was relieved that last couple of days when he wasn't on ESPN; I thought (hoped) they had pulled him, but he was probably off host the Rose Bowl Parade. I wonder if they’re bringing in an anchor like Elliott to relate to the younger generation.
