Pau Gasol To Be A Guest Star On CSI: Miami

You would think that CSI: Miami would pick Dwyane Wade to guest star on an episode of the show, but no. The producers have tabbed LA Laker Pau Gasol as a suspect for an episode that will air next month. From With Leather via the AP....

Spanish national basketball team player and LA Lakers star Pau Gasol says he recently completed filming a guest appearance on the hit US crime drama "CSI: Miami" in an interview published Sunday.

"It was a very attractive opportunity. I play Victor, a normal person who is involved in a car accident and police are suspicious that I am responsible for what happened. I have good, meaty dialogue with an officer," he told daily newspaper El Pais.

The episode will air on the CBS network in the United States next month. It will be one of the first episodes of the ninth season of the series about a team of South Florida forensic experts who probe mysterious or unusual deaths.

"I have always had the acting bug inside me. What this city gives me are opportunities. I'm in the best team in the league, I'm one of the best franchises and this is the city where it happens all the movies," he said.
This isn't the first time Gasol has made it onto a CBS show. Last year, he was on an episode of Numb3rs with teammate Jordan Farmar. As far as CSI: Miami is concerned, all I have to say is YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOWWWW!!!!!

Jay-Z And Alicia Keys Performing Before Game One Of The World Series

It's been since 2003 since the Yankees made an appearance in the World Series, so it comes as no surprise that they're breaking out all the stops for this year's Fall Classic. Before game one there will actually be a concert, and Jay-Z and Alicia Keys are scheduled to appear. Via NY Daily News....

The Yankees will get Empire State-size support from two of the music world's biggest stars.

Hip-hop mogul and Bombers booster Jay-Z will perform his hit "Empire State of Mind" just before the Yanks take on the Phillies in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday.

The Brooklyn native will join fellow New Yorker Alicia Keys in singing the rap anthem blasted at Yankee Stadium during the Bombers' postseason run.

"Thank the good Lord for making me a Yankee," Jay-Z said Monday, invoking the famous quote by Yankee legend Joe DiMaggio.
I'm a bit sick of that song, but it's about NYC and has been Jeter's entrance theme for awhile now, so it makes sense. Maybe the Phillies can get Pearl Jam to walk over to Citizen's Bank before the start of game three.

You Are No Bill Walker, Mark Sanchez

There's something about eating a tub of popcorn on the bench during a Basketball game that will never be topped. However, Mark Sanchez did his best to challenge, then Kansas State forward, Bill Walker in that regard. With the Jets running all over the Raiders, the golden boy grabbed himself a dog, and went to town. Via

Like I said, he's no Walker....and he's certainly no Carson Palmer....but it was still awfully entertaining. Sanchez even had a comment about it after the game.
"I want to apologize for that. I just wasn't feeling very good, couldn't eat much before the game. I just felt a little queasy and stuff, and toward the end of the game, I probably should've eaten one of those bars or something.

"Somebody offered one up, and I grabbed it. I tried to be discreet about it, but obviously not discreet enough. So I shouldn't do that. It won't happen again."- Mark Sanchez

Steve Phillips Has Been Fired From ESPN

Sunday, October 25, 2009

Well it took the weekend for a decision, but late Sunday night, ESPN officially fired Steve Phillips citing his inability to be an effective representative for the network. VP Mike Soltys has the announcement on his Twitter page....

I really hope they didn't feel pressure from Deadspin's stunt near the end of last week, but there was really no other choice for the "Leader". You would think this line of reasoning would be used more often by ESPN. (More tomorrow when the full release comes out)

Video: Bob Griese Enjoys Mexican Stereotypes

Saturday, October 24, 2009

By now everyone has heard that Bob Griese made a pretty racist statement yesterday, when he suggested Juan Pablo Montoya was out of the Top Five because "he was out having a taco." Well late yesterday evening he issued an apology through ESPN. Here's the video and the apology.

“Earlier today on our game I made an offensive comment regarding Juan Pablo Montoya as part of a NASCAR promo. It was regrettable and I should not have said it. I really enjoy NASCAR and I follow it closely and would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Juan, NASCAR and everyone else who heard my comment.”- Bob Griese

I just don't know what to say when these things happen anymore. How someone could ever think that would be funny is beyond me. Bob Griese now joins Tony Kornheiser in the Stereotype Hall of Fame.

Forgot Santa, Philly Boos TBS

Thursday, October 22, 2009

TBS might have had one of the worst set of broadcasts a network has every had, and the fact that people were singing the praises of Buck and McCarver....speaks volumes. Following the Phillies' series clinching win on Wednesday night, TBS' Ernie Johnson made his way to the podium to present the team's brass with the trophy. Ernie, being the true professional that he is, decided to announce the pleasure it was for his network to call the NLCS. Bad idea....

I don't say this very often, actually ever, but THANK YOU PHILADELPHIA! There is no better way to voice your displeasure for a network than they way you just demonstrated. I commend you, and promise to never bring up you guys booing Santa Claus....EVER AGAIN!

(P.S.- Don't get me wrong about Ernie Johnson. The reaction by him is the reason why he's one of the best in the business.)

Steve Phillips Is Dealing With A Case Of Fatal Attraction

I haven't watched much Baseball Tonight since the Playoffs began, but apparently their missing one key player. Steve Phillips has been rumored to be suspended from ESPN after having a brief affair with a 22 year old, but that's just half of the story. According to the NY Post, the 22 year old not only stalked Phillips, but she even made contact with both his wife and son before finally showing up at his house....

The former Met general manager, whose tenure with the team was rocked by admissions of infidelity, confessed to his wife and local cops that he had slept with ESPN assistant Brooke Hundley several times this past summer before dumping her.

In retaliation, the jilted young woman repeatedly phoned Phillips' wife, Marni, saying, "We both can't have him!" an explosive police report claims.

Hundley's desperate actions -- including accidentally smashing her car into a stone column while speeding away from the Phillips' home after leaving the letter -- terrified the family, according to the Wilton, Conn., police report.

"I have extreme concerns about the health and safety of my kids and myself," Steve Phillips said in a police statement, adding that the woman became "obsessive and delusional" after he dumped her.

But Phillips, 46, declined to pursue criminal charges against Hundley, a Bristol, Conn., woman who cops learned may have used an ESPN computer to contact Phillips' 16-year-old son on Facebook while posing as a high-school classmate.

Phillips -- who admitted having multiple affairs with women while working for the Mets -- is now being sued for divorce by his 40-year-old wife, the mother of his four sons. Two months ago, Phillips deeded the family's five-bedroom, multimillion-dollar Wilton home to her.
While that is a pretty good summation of the events, the details are even wilder, and not only does the Post have various statements (including a detailed on from Phillips), but they even have a letter that Hundley wrote to Mrs. Phillips. Just a crazy mess, and while I don't wish bad things on anyone, I think a divorce is best for everyone in this case.

Dick Vitale...."Ladies Man"

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

It's not often that a College has a guest speaker that is willing to answer questions about how he picks up chicks, but most guest speakers aren't Dick Vitale. The Sporting Blog has unearthed this insanely long question and answer period with Dickie V at Mercer College, and while most of the 30 minute interview is about Basketball, he does take time to address how he picks up chicks. Namely his wife....

Isn't Dickie V the best? Not only is he one of the nicest guys ever, he even gives kids dating advice!!!

ESPN Hires British Announcer Tyler For World Cup

Martin Tyler has been a fixture in the booth for the World Cup since 1978, so it comes as no surprise that ESPN had been targeting for the 2010 Cup in South Africa. Via ESPN PR....

Martin Tyler, one of the most accomplished and respected television play-by-play commentators in the United Kingdom for over 35 years, will join ESPN for the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament in South Africa. Tyler, who has called matches in every FIFA World Cup since 1978, will be the lead play-by-play voice for ESPN’s exclusive English-language coverage in the United States, which will be available on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN360.com and ABC. He will make his ESPN telecast debut Friday, June 11, 2010, at 9:30 a.m. ET, the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Voted the “FA Premier League Commentator of the Decade” in 2003 by fans and a panel of football experts, Tyler has been with the London-based Sky Sports network since its launch in 1991. His arrival at Sky Sports coincided with the formation of Premiership football and Sky’s acquisition of the league’s broadcast rights. Tyler has led Sky’s critically-acclaimed soccer commentary team, calling some of the Premier League’s best matches.

“Martin Tyler is one of the top English-language soccer commentators in the world; his experience, authentic style and in-depth knowledge of the game will help elevate ESPN’s presentation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, informing and entertaining our viewers in the United States,” said Jed Drake, ESPN senior vice president and executive producer, event production.
It's great that ESPN is finally understanding that they can't just throw their current announcers into something as big as overseas Soccer. Now with Tyler, American JP Dellacamera, Tommy Smyth and Andy Gray on board, ESPN has two great pairs they can put out for the World Cup. As long as they don't decided to bring the dreadful Dave O'Brien back. Here's a somewhat annoying remix of some famous Tyler calls, in case you want to get a taste of what he's like....

Martin Tyler to Call World Cup Games for ESPN! (SS Reporters)

Find The Typo: Dewey Defeats Truman 4-3!

One of my favorite genre of typo is when large sites prematurely post results to big games, even though the entire world knows the real result. The best example of this happened last night when MLB.com decided to hit publish on a pre-made story, and didn't bother to watch the bottom of the ninth....

Whoops. I remember the game happening more like this....

Can we also bring up the fact that there was never a throw to home plate? Another great game-winning call by Chip Caray.

Mike And The Mad Dog....Reunited And It Feeels....A Bit Awkward

Friday, October 16, 2009

When you work with some for 20 years, you build up a good bit of repoire with your partner. But when you have a breakup worthy of a Hollywood Romance drawn out in the tabloids, getting back together for nine minutes just seems a bit odd. Yesterday, Chris Russo brought on Mike Francessa to talk Baseball. Here's the clip if you want to take a listen....

Ahhh just like old times only a bit awkward. And all it took was for the Yankees not to choke, and make it to the ALCS. Maybe they can go 20 minutes if they get to the World Series!

Rod Smith Is Clairvoyant (And A Big Homer)

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Former Denver Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith is currently an analyst on the NFL Network, and before the season, he made a very bold prediction. I don't think a single planet predicted the Broncos to go 5-0 to start the season, but that's exactly what Rod did.

Now I know that was the homer pick of all homer picks, but still you have to give him some credit. In fact with Denver winning, Invesco is one of the loudest stadiums in the league. Too bad they have to play San Diego, Baltimore, Indy and Philly on the road.

Ron Darling Owes The IRS Quite A Bit Of Money

In these times it would be understandable if the average American got behind with the tax money they owed to the IRS, but for someone who pitched 13 years in the majors and is a full-time analyst to owe over $500K is a different story. According to the Detroit News, Ron Darling owes the IRS approximately $544,197 in state and federal taxes....

Tax agencies in two states and the IRS have former New York Mets pitcher and TBS analyst Ron Darling caught in a squeeze play. Darling, who helped call the Yankees-Twins game Sunday, owes $544,197 in state and federal taxes, records show.

The 49-year-old Hawaii native earned $17.9 million during a 13-season career, according to Baseball-Reference.com. He won a World Series ring with the Mets in 1986.

What's owed:

* The IRS filed a $71,076 lien against Darling on July 29 in the New York City Register's office.
* The state of New York filed a $12,664 tax warrant against Darling on May 23 in the New York County Clerk's office.
* The state of California filed an $84,860 lien against Darling on June 6, 2008, in Contra Costa County Court.
* The IRS filed a $375,597 lien against Darling on May 15, 2008, in the New York City Register's office.
Well then. A TBS spokesperson has left a message for Darling, and told the Det News that TBS, " will not comment as this is a personal issue." I'll be sure to update you when I hear more.

Terry Bradshaw Officially Dumber Than A Chicken

Terry Bradshaw is obviously a very colorful character, and it's long been suspected that his "dumb southerner" routine is just an act. Well thanks to a chicken on the new (and god awful) Jay Leno show, we know that's not the case...

Your tale of the tape....

Chicken: Ravens over the Bengals (wrong), the Falcons over the 49ers (right), and the Patriots over the Broncos (wrong)
Bradshaw: Ravens over the Bengals (wrong), 49ers over the Falcons (wrong), and Patriots over the Broncos (wrong)

I mean obviously those were some tough games, and both Bradshaw and the Chicken did terrible, but a loss is a loss. Terry is officially dumber than a chicken.
